Watkins Elementary School proudly commemorates the successful completion of its inaugural year with the Pretty Brown Girl Program, becoming the second school within the DC Public Schools (DCPS) district —following Malcolm X Elementary School under the leadership of Principal Zara Berry-Young—to embrace this transformative national movement designed to empower girls of color.

PBG proudly launched the inaugural cohort of the “Empowered Scholars” College Prep Program, an 8-week journey designed to prepare students and families for life after high school. Through engaging workshops and real-world skill-building, scholars of Renaissance High School in Detroit, MI explored everything from college and scholarship searches to tuition assistance, campus life, and personal/professional development. Participants gained hands-on experience in resume and cover letter writing, and personal statements, interviewing techniques, setting a strong foundation for their future academic and career paths.

Pretty Brown Girl was honored to be selected as a participant in the “Detroit Built. Detroit Beautiful” event, an exclusive 313 Day Influencer Gifting Suite hosted by The Lip Bar and its powerhouse CEO, Melissa Butler. The event brought together 75+ of Detroit’s most influential content creators and tastemakers, providing a powerful platform for PBG to share its mission, connect with brand advocates, and celebrate the beauty and brilliance of Detroit-built brands.

Pretty Brown Girl is proud to announce its exciting expansion into Plymouth-Canton Community Schools for the 2024–2025 school year! Through this impactful partnership, PBG is now serving students across nine schools, from elementary through high school, delivering our nationally recognized, culturally responsive programming. This expansion marks a major milestone in our mission to empower more girls through self-love, leadership development, and academic success across diverse educational settings.
